What If?                   Portland, Oregon OMSI

For reference, this  link takes you to the official Portland, Oregon OMSI development page: https://omsi.edu/future-omsi-district/

The main "Story" here is about "TECHNOLOGY", both hardware and software, and how engineering and creativity are things that work together to create INNOVATION. When that is combined with COLLABORATION, it promotes "GROWTH".

The OREGON MUSEUM OF "SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY"
       OMSI

The New Technology Health & Science Pavilion

The information below is based on a concept that will provide an experience and environment that will promote growth through innovation and collaboration and SHOWCASE the many contributions Oregon & the PNW are making to many different industries.

All elements used in any illustration are not the final design intent or suggestion, but are design "placeholders". It is a "concept" and is meant to spark positive conversation. Some images are rough versions to just help visualize what might be in this very early stage. More like 3D real-time napkin sketches.

The New Technology Health & Science Pavilion represents a rare opportunity to create a landmark destination while simultaneously building a scalable innovation platform with national and international relevance.
Located on Portland’s central riverfront and anchored by OMSI’s trusted educational brand, the project combines a 150,000-square-foot immersive Technology, Health &
Science Pavilion within a broader 24-acre mixed-use innovation district. Together, these assets establish a new model for experiential science engagement, technology demonstration, workforce development, tourism generation, and public-private
collaboration.

Consumer expectations have changed dramatically. Visitors increasingly seek experiences that are immersive, participatory, social, and technology-enabled. The most
successful attractions today—such as teamLab and Meow Wolf—demonstrate the demand for destinations that blend storytelling, technology, and exploration.

The New Technology Health and Science Pavilion advances this model by adding scientific credibility, educational impact, research partnerships, and real-world innovation.
The project is designed as far more than a museum. It is an innovation ecosystem where artificial intelligence, robotics, human performance, healthcare, immersive media,
ocean exploration, sustainability, and advanced manufacturing converge within a single destination. Visitors do not simply observe innovation—they actively participate in it.

Beyond admissions revenue, the Pavilion creates long-term value through intellectual property development, exhibit licensing, corporate sponsorships, educational programming, hospitality operations, district development, and strategic partnerships.
This diversified business model positions the project to become both a regional economic catalyst and a globally recognized innovation brand.
We invite visionary investors, philanthropic leaders, corporations, and public-sector partners to join us in creating a transformational asset that will inspire future generations,
strengthen the Pacific Northwest innovation economy, and establish Portland as one of the world’s leading destinations for science, technology, and human discovery.

What if we could bring 1000 People per hour to OMSI's front door from across the river and take them back again?

This dynamic "Visible Whale" Lives high up above the floor until the main event. A lecture created by Dr. Bruce Mate
( mmi.oregonstate.edu/people/bruce-mate )  from the Hatfield Marine Science  Center. Dr. Mate is the no. 1 Whale expert on the planet and has prepared this inspiring anatomical discussion/show-&-tell.  This whale is the next generation teaching aid constructed out of carbon fiber panels, urethane foam, and the state-of-the-art in robots and control systems. As the whale, lovingly referred to as " Big Mama," drops down from above and takes her position, her specially designed exterior opens up in large segments like a gull-wing Mercedes, revealing a form-fitted LED screen that plays a multi-layered view of all the internal layers, including the blubber, muscles, circulation system, nervous system, and skeletal system, etc. All these layers are controlled by the show control and or the guest presenter and can be changed in real-time depending on the presenter. It is a mesmerizing, intense reveal of the parts of a whale, the giants of the deep we rarely get to examine. This 30-minute lecture from one of the great minds and institutions must not be missed.
The team is busy building a robotic version of Dr. Mate and his torso sits watching on a nearby workbench, complete with a video facial display that is the spitting image of Dr. Mate. He is under construction on a workbench, but that does not stop him from micro-managing the presentation and offering corrections from the peanut gallery, if you will.
Another interactive research project in collaboration with the Hatfield might be a "Tag-along". There is a team at the Hatfield that goes down to the Antarctic, carrying their custom hand-built satellite-tracking and telemetry "TAGS" to track Monk Seals and other species that they create, design, and build in their labs at the Hatfield. Innovation in action!

Using this ROV Harvesting concept, detailed on this page
( williammichaelmchugh.weebly.com/rovester.html  ),
We will form an "Innovation Collaboration" with NOAA, NASA, OMSI, OSU, UO, Intel, Microsoft, Nike, REV Ocean, The FISHING INDUSTRY & any other interested collaborators to launch a new age of "Earth Maintenance" programs, only made possible now with the new technologies available and the willingness to INNOVATE, COLLABORATE, and INCUBATE  new ways to work together to do our part. "MAN's" PART in the care of this fragile planet.  This is one of the teaching spaces planned in our INNOVATE complex concept for PORTLAND. In fact, this room and experience are a perfect example of a potential new "PRODUCT"
that can be configured in varying sizes. They would offer real-time graphics simulation training with situational awareness and/ or a remote LIVE hands-on working module ready for action anywhere on the globe with totally remote capability and or shipborne solutions. And we can design, engineer, and build the ROVs required for multiple uses and industries, or work in collaboration to subcontract the production to new startups around the world.

We can configure this training and work module to fit on any of your vessels, greatly expanding the guests' "Immersive Scientific Experience". They can also be manned from shore installations and synced with harvesting & or research vessels. Check out this important eco-project here:

The Pacific Northwest has "WEATHER", whether you like it or not! So many new technological breakthroughs have been made that it could make your head spin. This teaching room offers a look at WEATHER and the environment in a new way.
Headed up or curated by visiting guest scientists from the NOAA installation in Newport, this experience would be a DEEP-DIVE into the unique history of weather in the PNW and how it has  "sculpted" the ground and environment we call home.

Using the same modified data infrastructure, another new product could be configured and brought to market. Here we see a training classroom for ROV operators that will be used to build the first Martian Facilities before manned habitation.
What a wonderful time to be able to educate and guide in the development of groundbreaking new technologies and industries that will help our species survive. Hopefully.

AI TOOLS & ANIMATION PRODUCTION:
Having a FLEXIBLE  space, use program can also lead to some exciting use cases, like here we see an LED production class hosted by OMSI and an event sponsor like James Cameron, Silverdraft, or one of the other groundbreaking production teams from the movie and game industries. Each guest will have a tablet with links to live feeds of both the setup and the action to get a real over-the-shoulder learning experience from the masters of innovation working in the industry.

INNOVATIONS in the use of AI in all forms of film production.  Here we see a very sophisticated, refined, and emotional use of AI that keeps all the traditional animation production methodologies and storytelling tools very much in the human director's hands.
This charming humanistic/ technical innovation story, by Zachary Florance can only be explained in his own words:

 "STILL HERE"   PRODUCTION THOUGHTS:

  By Zachary Florance:
"I made a short animated film about loss. It's called "Still Here." It follows an elderly widower named Arthur and his dog Romeo. I didn't plan to release it around Mother's Day — but maybe the timing isn't an accident. Holidays like this one can be heavy for anyone carrying the weight of someone they've lost. Here's the honest origin story: I didn't start with the idea. I started with a question — I wonder if I can make a short film using the current AI tools? I had to learn the limitations of AI before I could write anything. Once I understood what these tools could and couldn't do, the story had to be built to live inside that. From those constraints, this idea was born — pulled from some personal experiences and situations.
This five-minute film took months. Let me dispel the idea that AI tools "do it all for you". AI is absolutely not a cheat code — this was probably the hardest project I've ever worked on. The tools are magnificent for improving quality and speed, but nothing about the actual creation part changed. I still had to design the characters. Write them. Direct the scenes. Direct the motion within shots. Edit the cut. Choose the music. Choose the sound effects. Tell an authentic story. The film has around 60 shots. I generated thousands to get there. The volume of iteration required to land a single image that works is staggering — and that taste, that judgment, that storytelling instinct, is something AI cannot do for you. What is exciting is this: AI is bridging the gap between home producers and Hollywood-level production. I think we're not far from a future where micro-teams put together full-length features. But "micro" still means a team. This will always be a collaborative process. Anyone dealing with loss this Mother's Day - hope this film finds you gently. Would love to see your comments and thoughts below. Did you like the film? What do you think of AI tools for creatives? Tools used: Higgsfield AI, Nano Banana Pro, Kling, Seedance, Adobe Creative Suite, PremiumBeat. "

Bespoke Immersive LED Experiences like this one from Elport Digital. Baby steps to the "Holodeck"!  Adding interactivity and gamification is a no-brainer. So many exciting options and opportunities to explore! Now we can flow along in the veins and arteries of our body, and meet and interact with all the fantastic elements found in the bloodstream.  Grab a blood cell and zoom into it with gesture technology and see the intracellular components that keep us alive and growing in action, all in real-time. We can make it happen now with new game engine technology, new hardware developments, and AI innovations. The only limitation is your imagination. We can even add AR, MR, et al., and 3D stereo glasses, smells, wind, mist, and temperature zones, and more!

 “Innovation Incubation Module”
Preliminary Idea Shopping list: Food for Thought (WIP)

Immersive and engaging like OMSI, this expansion, “Innovation Incubation Module,” explores all things touched by the digital universe, which is…well, everything! They all use some type of digital tools to analyze, measure, repair, create, discover, document, describe, or predict. From sports physiology to astronomy, from archaeology to medicine, and from atoms to construction, we rely on digital tools to gain more understanding and help us do what we couldn’t easily do before. At OMSI Too, we show and tell about these tools, how they work, and the scientific and technological wonders they have helped us discover. And we play with some of them!

The digital world allows us to take you anywhere in the universe. You can track monk seals in Antarctica, view baby eagles in Washington DC, or look at space through an observatory telescope in Chile. Wherever cameras or sensors are tracking some part of our world and the skies above, we can bring those feeds to OMSI Too. When we can’t get live feeds, we can create compelling lifelike simulations. In the ROV Theater concept, guests can operate underwater robots working to manage the ocean floor. OMSI Too can take the guests farther, deeper, and smaller to discover and explain what is currently known about ourselves and our world.

OMSI can also present the pros and cons in the debates about the risks some technologies present. AI is both controversial and a game-changer in scientific and technological development. While OMSI Too embraces AI’s potential, it explains the risks as well. We invite the debate and don’t judge the conclusions.
  • AI in film and science fiction writing
  • AI Large Language Models running at OMSI
    • Explain how they work and what they control/assist
    • Air gapped to provide only OMSI curated content
    • “Ask OMSI” to answer guest questions through their smartphones
    • Teacher interface through their smartphones to find suggested exhibits and museum paths to support curriculum focus
  • AI Frontiers/Potential
    • AI has the potential to explore beyond what humans are capable of thinking (a multi-dimensional universe beyond four dimensions). AI can learn what is beyond our ability and then teach us.
      • Tell the honey bee dance story. In the 1920s, Karl von Frisch discovered that honeybees do a dance that tells the direction and distance to a food source. In the 1970’s, Barbara Shipman bonded with her father as a young girl studying Karl von Frisch’s work, discovering the honey bee dance. In the 1990’s, Shipman was a mathematician studying 6th-dimensional math functions. Humans cannot perceive the shape and form of a 6th-dimensional object. Our brains won’t go there. So Shipman was graphing the reflection of the 6th-dimensional object on various 2-dimensional planes. She discovered that the function she was working on was very familiar when reflected on the X/Y plane, i.e., parallel to the ground. It looked like the honey bee dance. So she substituted values for food source distance and direction into the function and got the same answers as the honey bee dance. Honey bees could possibly be creatures that communicate in the 6th dimension. AI could study Shipman’s work to inform an exploration into a multi-dimensional universe. There is more beyond what humans can conceive.
  • Robots!
    • The ultimate science fiction AI model comes to reality!
    • Uses in industry (factory automation), transportation (self-driving cars), hospitality (waiters, bartenders, room service), services (robot vacuums, personal assistants, robot lawn mowers), medicine (robot surgical arms, smart prosthetics)
    • Current R&D robot development around the world
  • AI/Robot job replacement debate. Where do humans continue to fit in and be employed?

These NEW exhibits can be easily exported via touring shows and empty mall space utilization. And some can be exported as software to classrooms all over the world.

Possible Exhibits
  • “Bleeding Edge” – shows where the current R&D for various industries/technologies is. What can we look forward to in the near-ish future?
  • “Gadgets” – shows devices that are stuck in development, but hold great promise. Case in point is the personal air conditioner that is worn on the wrist and directly cools blood traveling through the wrist to cycle throughout the body. The device lowers the perception of heat by the wearer by 5 degrees. The product is stopped from continued development until batteries get smaller and more powerful, or the device can operate with much less power.
  • “High Tech Archaeology” – shows new methodologies and tools for discovering ancient civilizations, artifacts, and dinosaurs.
  • “Surveillance” – shows new methodologies and tools for surveilling people and vehicles from traffic cams to master spies. Explores invasion of privacy vs safety/security
  • “Build It!” – shows new methodologies and tools for building a building from 3D design to shop drawings/material lists, and from self-driving trucks and earth-moving equipment to 3D printed components and walls.
  • “Weather Sandbox” – an interactive Earth weather model where guests can make minor changes in the weather model to see the resulting weather changes throughout the world. Change air pressure, ocean current flow, and humidity. NOAA data.
  • “Eat it Up!” – shows efforts to eat up the plastics in the Pacific Plastic Gyre. Could do a classic Pac-Man game for eating the plastics.
  • “Kon-Tiki” revisited– shows effort to build a raft, and attempts to sail to paradise. via star charts woven into cowrie shell-laden native art.
  • “Wide World of Sports Physiology” – uses 3D image capture and analysis tools to see what power various athletes exert, and then explains how they can do it. Examines sports from baseball to hockey, track to ballet. Then the guests get to see how they compare to the athletes. This could be developed to provide metrics that could be licensed to sports broadcasts. Local teams could also come to measure their performances.
  • “World Hunger” – interactive world crop model demonstrating crop costs vs transportation costs. Guests pick a crop in one part of the world and then see what the transportation costs are to another part of the world. The exhibit then looks at the population of the area/country that needs to be fed by that crop vs the GDP of the area/country to see if they can afford the crop from that part of the world. Demonstrates that world agriculture needs to be managed holistically to have a supply near demand. Works with real-time economic figures.
  • “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” – virtual laparoscopic heart surgery performed by guests. Modern-day “Operation!” game. Heart surgery simulator.
  • “Virtual World Matrix” – compares “2nd Life” to “The Matrix”. Asserts that the Matrix is dystopian because it is more interesting as a movie premise. The film would not have been interesting if it were about a happy world like “2nd Life”. But a virtual world that we live in does not have to be dystopian. And that once humans can identify the core of our consciousness and put that in a virtual world, we will have essentially created “The Matrix”. And once again, good or bad, we will have done it to ourselves.
  • “Hall of Animation” – AI green screen capture of guests walking down a hallway with the wall on one side of the hallway painted green screen green with the other side with an LED wall with cameras. Guests are seen on the LED wall walking into Toon Town. The animated environment can be changed to reflect seasons, holidays, or any special focus.
  • “Light Organ” – a room of colored light beams and floor sensors that each trigger notes. The guests move through the room to play music. AI controls the room so that the notes are harmonious instead of discordant. Gestural sensors also color the notes, giving swells, harmonic chords, and dynamic range.
